RØDE Microphones is pleased to announce that it is bringing UK based filmmaker and digital video pioneer Philip Bloom to Australia this February for an exclusive tour of his hugely popular Digital SLR workshops. Arguably the world’s foremost authority on filmmaking with Digital SLR cameras, Philip Bloom is truly a multi-skilled filmmaker having over twenty years experience as a cinematographer, director, editor and sound engineer. His short films have garnered international acclaim, and commercially he has worked for Lucasfilm, Discovery, Sky News, Fox, BBC, Apple and Microsoft amongst many more.
When Canon released the 5D Mk II digital SLR camera in late 2008 the inclusion of a video mode that allowed recording at full 1080P high definition was almost an afterthought. However the combination of the high-quality image capture and the ability to use relatively cheap photography lenses to achieve a cinematic ‘depth of field’ was a breakthrough for both independent and professional filmmakers alike. True cinema-quality video had become available for a fraction of the cost of existing technologies and Philip was one of the first to exploit the format. His short film ‘Sofia’s People’ immediately became a worldwide sensation and a showcase for the DSLR video movement.
While the video capturing abilities of these cameras is incredibly powerful, they are considerably complex to use, lack professional audio inputs, and require users to be familiar with a range of tips and techniques to get the best results from their video productions. As a pioneer in the DSLR video revolution Philip has been responsible for guiding hundreds of thousands of filmmakers through these pitfalls, helping them obtain previously unimaginable results from such compact and affordable cameras and accessories.
In recent years Philip has gained an almost celebrity level status within the filmmaking community, touring the globe hosting workshops and sharing both his experiences and best practices with professional and independent filmmakers. This February Philip is bringing his workshop series to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, exclusively for Australian pro audio manufacturer RØDE Microphones.
As one of the world’s leading microphone manufacturers, RØDE’s reputation for making high-quality audio products accessible to a wider market has only accelerated the growth of HDSLR filmmaking and allowed budding cinematographers to achieve professional audio results to match their stunning visuals. With the recent release of the VideoMic Pro RØDE has produced the world’s first microphone with features specifically designed for HDSLR cameras, something that Philip will demonstrate during his workshop.
“Sound is the forgotten cousin of cinematography but must not be” commented Philip. “It is as important, if not more important than the images, as we will forgive average pictures if the sound is clear but not the other way around.”
“In my workshops I explain the limitations of these cameras both in terms of video and audio, show the differences between the cameras available, and show what equipment you need for best results both lens-wise and sound-wise. The workshop also includes a complete dual system sound demonstration using a separate audio recorder, followed by post production.”
